Is a Layover in Stockholm Worth It?

Luleå: The Winter Wonderland You Didn’t Know About

Nestled just 150 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, Luleå, Sweden, is a charming city of about 80,000 residents, founded in 1621. Often boasting five seasons, a blend of spring and winter—this northern outpost transforms into a winter wonderland in February, when I embarked on an unforgettable trip there.

Arriving in sub-zero temps, Luleå felt surprisingly modern and vibrant. We caught a glimpse of the Northern Lights, missing the peak by a week, but the short daylight created a magical, ethereal atmosphere. I was there to film a speed skating marathon. The event unfolded on a frozen river, so clear you could see through it. We explored colorful Swedish architecture—vibrant yellows and trademark reds. A highlight was attending a hockey game, where we scored prime seats. For a small town, Luleå punches above its weight in sports and culture.

Winter offers unique thrills: ice walking, marathons, and that crisp, invigorating cold. Summer promises cottage vibes, but if you’re chasing adventure, bundle up and head north—it’s an experience you’ll cherish.
